The Erie Canal influenced the work, life, and culture of Western New York in many ways. This workshop will focus on how the Allan Herschell Carrousel Factory and other local industries benefited and changed with the development of the Erie Canal. Students will tour the museum to learn about the history of carrousel production and how the canal and railroad system in North Tonawanda allowed the Herschell Companies to be the most prolific carrousel producers. At the end of the tour, students will collaborate using historical documents and maps to create a turn of the century Geo-Cache adventure. Workshop is customizable based on grade level.
Workshop can also be done as an outreach museum tour in schools. Tour component will be replaced with a PowerPoint lecture.
