Director of Education for Young Audiences of Western New York

Nancy Fernandez is the Director of Education for Young Audiences of WNY where she develops and manages all arts education programming and special projects including assessment and evaluation.  A graduate of Emory University in Atlanta, GA, Nancy began her professional career as a script reader for Alan Ladd Jr. at Paramount Studios.  She soon found herself working as a production assistant on A Very Brady Sequel; working directly with director Arlene Sanford as well as the art and props department.  Better with people than with props, Nancy eventually landed as a SAG and AFTRA certified talent and literary agent with the former Writers and Artists Agency, (now Paradigm), where she helped nurture the careers of such notable talents as Lauryn Hill and William H. Macy.  After some time, her nature got the better of her and she left Hollywood to begin training as a Cantor.  This path indirectly led her to SUNY at Buffalo, where she earned her Masters in Secondary English Education.

Over the next ten years of being a high school English teacher, Nancy took on several leadership roles: running the National Honor Society, directing musical theater and Dean of the senior class.  She was on several school leadership committees and participated in several fellowships: The WNY Writing Project, which besides expanding on her already strong creative writing skills, trained her in delivering professional development to other teachers, and Facing History and Ourselves out of Boston, MA. Through this amazing, international organization, Nancy acquired an array of new skills teaching tolerance, student centered learning and creative problem solving; which she brought back in the turn-key training of her school’s faculty back in Los Angeles.  Parallel to her teaching career, Nancy has been published in several on-line blogs and magazines and active in the professional music arena as well; writing, recording and performing at some of the most famous venues in Los Angeles and now with her new band in Buffalo, NY.
